Perils of a wrong turn in the Mekong Delta

LAST year my friend and I went on a three-day bike riding tour of the Mekong Delta in Vietnam.

The trip began with a boat ride down the Mekong River and a long lunch. Then we threw our bags in a minivan and began an easy ride of about 20km on small dirt roads.

We crossed bridges and passed ricefields, farms, villages and smiling locals.

I am not a strong rider so I was pleased to be able to keep up. Life seemed very good that day and I didn’t notice how dark it was getting…
